India's true southernmost point is Indira Point

Good morning

On 29 September 1954, twelve European countries founded the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). It is the world's largest laboratory for particle physics. Its main site sits on the border between France and Switzerland, just outside Geneva. Since then, CERN has run a particle accelerator inside a 27-kilometre tunnel.

This issue looks at a Moroccan university older than any in Europe. It also covers India's true southernmost point, and Africa's tallest mountain.

India's southernmost point is not Kanyakumari

Most people point to Kanyakumari, the tip of the Indian mainland, as India's southernmost spot. It is only the southernmost point of the mainland.

The true southernmost point of India is Indira Point, on Great Nicobar Island, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It lies about 150 kilometres farther south than Kanyakumari, roughly the distance from London to Birmingham.

Indira Point sits just 145 kilometres from Indonesia, closer to the island of Sumatra than to mainland India. India's territory stretches far into the Bay of Bengal. Its true southern edge lies on one of those islands, not on the peninsula most maps draw the eye to.

Fez, Morocco

Fez is a city in northern Morocco, once the country's capital. Its old walled centre, the medina, is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world.

Inside that medina stands the University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859. Guinness World Records lists it as the oldest existing, working institution that grants degrees anywhere in the world. That makes it older than any university in Europe. Bologna, in Italy, is often called Europe's oldest university. It was not founded until 1088, more than two centuries later.

A woman named Fatima al-Fihri founded the university. She came from a merchant family and used her inheritance to build it as a mosque and place of learning. It has taught students in Fez for over 1,100 years.

The height of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest mountain

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa, at 5,895 metres. It stands in Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. From the plains around it, the mountain rises about 4,877 metres. That is roughly the height of 16 Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other. Kilimanjaro is 696 metres taller than Mount Kenya, the continent's second-highest peak. It also stands alone rather than as part of a mountain range, making it the largest free-standing mountain in the world. That makes it a landmark many climbers can reach without technical climbing gear.
